I’m just a Broadway Baby…

Learning how to sing and dance…

It’s time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap!

-”Wicked”

It all started when…

Broadway actresses Anne Letscher (Fiddler on the Roof) and Rena Strober (Les Miserables) both moved from NYC to Los Angeles for their careers. They also happened to have babies a week apart from each other in 2017. Despite their lives changing dramatically (no pun intended), they didn’t want to stop doing what they love…SINGING and DANCING! As new parents, they also wanted to be great role models and teachers for their daughters and other wonderful children.

Anne and Rena knew the importance of music in a child’s development but didn’t want to just sit in a circle singing “Wheels on the Bus” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider.” They wanted their little ones to have good taste in music, be cultured, and have fun. So, in 2018, they birthed A STAR IS BORN! (This birth experience was a little less painful than their first.) Los Angeles parents are thirsting for a class that combines Broadway show tunes with educational techniques for their children…we showed up to quench that thirst!

A Star is Born brings Broadway music to young ears along with wonderful and educational games and lessons. Through music Anne and Rena teach rhythm, dance, colors, singing and so much more. They use instruments, bubbles, scarves, parachutes, rhythm sticks, shakers and the occasional costume piece to create a magical world for young Broadway stars. Not only do they focus on giving children a class that will teach, entertain and inspire, but as mothers, they know it’s important to keep other parents entertained and involved. They choose music that is enjoyed by all ages.

Each 6-8 week session consists of a weekly 50 minute class. During these classes there are 3 songs at the beginning (Step in Time, You’re in the Band, Good Morning) and 1 song at the end that are staples of class. This gives the children stability and allows them an opportunity to learn and grow through the repetition. It’s beautiful to see how quickly they remember choreography from one week to the next. It’s also amazing to see them ask for these songs at home or practice their vocal warm-ups from their cribs!

Each class also celebrates a different Broadway show each week! Anne and Rena use the featured show and 3 of its hit songs to teach rhythm, dance, colors, emotions, make-believe and more. Parents who sign up for the session will help choose these shows. Some past favorites have been Wicked, Little Mermaid, Hamilton, Frozen, Annie and Mamma Mia.

At the end of each session Rena and Anne invite a few of their talented Broadway friends to come and do a short concert with them!

It’s never too early to start getting your child as obsessed with Pippin as you are…but don’t freely admit. Come play and sing with Anne and Rena as they give your child a Broadway experience each week that’s much cheaper than the cost of a single ticket at the Ahmanson.
